Athena Counselling & Psychotherapy Services

Athena Counselling and Training Workshops provides a counselling service to both  the general public and to those in the early stages of training as counsellors and psychotherapists.

Counselling provides a safe space for individuals to explore and understand why they are feeling a certain way. They may be experiencing stress, anxiety, low mood or any number of feelings which they are struggling to manage.
By meeting with a therapist who can provide a space of acceptance of them as they are, in a world where we can wear various masks, in the pretence that we are O.K., the individual can begin to gain control of any overwhelming feelings which may be impacting their day to day functioning.

Child & Adolescent Counselling

'All children have the potential to re-enact and retell their experiences through creative expression, particularly when their therapists recognise and utilize the power of Art and Play, Stories, Music and Movement to transform suffering and to help them reacapture health and hope for the future' ( Malchiodi 2008 )

Early intervention can support a child to make sense of their emotions and to build resilience.

Children express themselves through their behaviour and through play. A child may feel angry or sad ad may not have the language to explain or to understand those emotions. Play Therapy taps into the child's unconscious. Children play out different scenarios and express various emotions while playing with toy figures, sand and puppets, etc. The material provides a tool to unleash what is going on internally.

Couple Counselling

There is a natural progression in any relationship from the 'honeymoon' period when a couple first meet to a more sedate, comfortable relationship. Relationships can be impacted by life events including the birth of children, loss and grief, career changes, depression and a number of 'normal' life events.

Most couples get through these periods by supporting each other. Sometimes when the crisis is over they realise something has changed. It takes work to keep a relationship thriving and daily life can get in the way and leave little time.

Couple counselling can provide a safe space for couple who want to explore the dynamics of their relationship and to explore ways they can improve it.
